Introduction to Transformational Business

I decided it was time for a blog about how to do Transformational Business in Turkey.  I've lived and worked here for many years and have thought about a number of ways of talking about transformational business and this seems the best option.

I'll start today by explaining what I mean by Transformation and then what I hope to get done through this blog.

Transformation means change.  I plan to use it in the positive sense only, that is, change for the better, including social, spiritual and economic improvement for the people of this country.  I work within a Protestant church here and have written and spoken about issues relating to culture, the work ethic and worldview.  Business is a great place to effect change in all of these areas.

Business can be just about making money.  That's what they taught me in business school.  Sadly, the consequence of that thinking is what is stereotyped in so many Hollywood films - greedy men and women abusing the poor while they pursue short term objectives.  The economic crash of the last couple of years is a good example of where short term profit maximization leads us.  But if business is for transformation then both the focus and the outcome are different.  And better!

Business involves profit, but much in the same way living involves breathing.  My life goal and objective isn't breathing.  Or even breathing well!  On the other hand, if I can't breathe then any other goals don't matter much.  When something hinders my breathing then breathing becomes my exclusive focus!

Try looking at profits that way.  (I know, for some of you that hurts!  But bear with me.)  The business needs profit to survive and if it's losing too much money too fast then profit and cash flow become the focus.  But under normal circumstances the real goal is something else.  For me it's transformation: making a product that makes the world better; showing the love of God to those with whom I work; developing the skills and character of the people who work for me; showing care and compassion to those who sell to me or buy from me; improving the economy, the environment, the industry and the society.  It's seeing the kingdom of God manifested in the living and active economy around us.

I value your comments and hopefully they will guide me in taking this blog in the right direction!

For the glory of God,
Robert*
